Iron Road
What is Via Ferrata?
Italian for “iron road,” Via Ferrata bridges the gap between hiking and rock climbing. This ACMG-certified guided, climbing experience allows you to explore steep alpine terrain using fixed safety cables, ladders, and bridges.
With five routes high on the cliffs above Mt Norquay, you’ll cross suspension bridges, climb iron rungs, and move confidently along the mountainside while taking in expansive views of Banff National Park. Secured by a harness and safety lines, no previous climbing experience is required—just a sense of adventure.
No Experience Required
Who can do it?
Norquay’s Via Ferrata routes are designed to accommodate a wide range of abilities, welcoming individuals, families, and groups. No prior climbing experience is necessary, but participants should be comfortable hiking continuously for one hour or more, depending on the route.

How Does it Work?
Via Ferrata transforms steep mountain terrain into a safe, accessible adventure. Routes are equipped with fixed features such as iron rungs, ladders, steel steps, and suspension bridges to guide your movement across the rock.
A steel safety cable runs through parts of your route. You’ll wear a harness with specialized lanyards that clip into the cable, keeping you securely connected at all times. Before starting, ACMG-certified guides provide a full safety briefing and instruction, and you’ll be outfitted with a helmet, harness, and all required equipment.
